النقاط الرئيسية

  • A decision needs real alternatives, something at stake and a date; until you have all three, you are holding a worry, not a decision.
  • Write the decision as one question with a deadline and a named owner, so everyone knows exactly what is being chosen and by when.
  • Screen options with a few must-haves first, then trade off the nice-to-haves, asking why each one matters until you reach what you really want.
  • Gather information only while some plausible answer could change your choice, and prefer a cheap, reversible test to a long debate.
  • Money and time already spent are gone whichever way you choose, so compare only what each option costs and brings from today.

  1. What counts as a decision

A decision is a commitment to one course of action among real alternatives, made without knowing for certain how it will turn out. Three things have to be present: at least two genuine options, something at stake such as money, time or a relationship, and a point by which you will choose.

  2. The working vocabulary of choosing

A handful of terms make every later step clearer. Alternatives are the options you are choosing between.

  3. Move one: state the decision

The first move is to write the decision as a single question with a deadline and an owner. The owner is the person who makes the final call, even if others advise.

  4. Move two: know what you want first

Before comparing options, write down what you want. Split it into must-haves, which rule an option out completely, and nice-to-haves, which you will trade against each other.

  5. Move three: find what would change your mind

Most decisions turn on one or two doubts. The third move is to name the doubt that could change your choice and ask whether learning more is worth the time.

  6. Classic beginner mistakes to avoid

A few traps catch almost every new decider. The sunk cost trap is letting money or time already spent steer the choice, when it is gone whichever way you decide.
