1. Transitions are make-or-break moments

   Picture a manager who has just been promoted to run a new team in a new city. For the first few months she costs the company more than she contributes: she asks questions, makes small mistakes, and needs the time of people around her.

   Not every new role needs the same leader. Watkins offers a simple diagnostic he calls STARS: start-up, turnaround, accelerated growth, realignment, and sustaining success.

   New leaders often feel pressure to prove themselves immediately, so they start changing things before they understand them. Watkins calls this the action imperative, and it is a trap.

4. Secure early wins that matter

   Momentum is built, not granted. Watkins argues that a few visible successes in the first months do more for your credibility than a grand strategy nobody has seen work yet.

5. Negotiate success with your boss

   Your relationship with your new manager is the single biggest lever in a transition, and Watkins says you must actively shape it rather than wait for it to form. He suggests five conversations to hold early.

   If you are starting something new this month, begin by writing down which STARS situation you are in and what that implies for your pace. Draft a one-page learning plan listing the 10 people you will talk to in your first 2 weeks and the 3 questions you will ask each of them.
