  • Ethical skill with AI grows in four stages, aware, careful, questioning and confident, and you can name the stage you are at today.
  • The aware stage is about vocabulary: fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy and safety are five lenses, not five slogans.
  • The careful stage turns the lenses on your own use: what you paste, what you check, what you disclose and what you refuse to automate.
  • The questioning stage is about systems that decide about people, where the right move is to ask who is affected, who checks and who can appeal.
  • Confidence is not certainty; it is being able to run a short review, name the trade-off and say plainly what you would change.

  1. The ladder: four stages and their signs

Most people imagine AI ethics as a subject you either know or do not. It behaves more like a skill, and skills have stages.

  2. Stage one: aware, the five lenses

Five words organise almost every AI ethics conversation. Fairness asks whether the system treats groups of people differently without a good reason.

  3. Stage two: careful, your own habits

The second rung is where the lenses point at you. Most people's first ethical failures with AI are small and personal: pasting a colleague's appraisal into a chatbot to 'tidy it up', accepting a summary of a contract without reading the contract, letting a tool write a reference letter and signing it as if every word were yours.

  4. Stage three: questioning systems that decide

Beyond your own use sit systems that decide about people: which applicants get an interview, which insurance claims get flagged, which students are marked as likely to drop out, which faces a camera stores. The questioning stage is the ability to ask the right five questions about such a system without needing to see its code.

  5. Stage four: confident, running a short review

The top rung is not knowing everything; it is being able to review a use of AI in half an hour and say something useful. A short review has four parts.

  6. Practising deliberately and knowing you moved up

Skills move only with practice aimed at the next rung, not the one you are on. If you are aware, practise spotting: read one story about AI each week and name the lenses involved.
