Points clés

  • Almost every AI system does one thing: it learns patterns from many examples, then uses them to predict, sort or produce something new.
  • You already rely on AI every day, in maps, spam filters, fraud alerts and photo apps, so learning to notice it is the first skill.
  • Separate AI that sorts, which labels and ranks things, from AI that makes, which writes and draws, because each fails in a different way.
  • Data decides what an AI can do and whose lives it fits, so guard your own data and question systems trained on narrow examples.
  • Prioritise judgement, privacy settings and checking important answers; ignore talk of thinking machines and the pressure to try every new app.

À l'intérieur de ce bit

  1. The one idea underneath all AI

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a broad name for computer systems that do tasks we once thought needed a human mind, such as recognising a face or answering a question. Underneath almost all of today's AI sits one idea called machine learning.

  2. The AI you already use without noticing

Most people meet AI dozens of times a day without calling it that. The map app that reroutes you around a traffic jam is predicting journey times from millions of past trips.

  3. Two families: AI that sorts and AI that makes

It helps to split AI into two broad families. The first sorts: it labels, ranks or scores things.

  4. Data is both the fuel and the fingerprint

An AI system can only be as good as the examples it learned from. If a face-recognition tool was trained mostly on lighter-skinned faces, it will make more mistakes with darker ones.

  5. What AI does well and where it stumbles

AI is strongest where there is plenty of past data and the task repeats: spotting patterns in thousands of transactions, transcribing speech, translating common languages, drafting routine text. It is fast, tireless and consistent.

  6. What to prioritise and what to ignore

With so much noise around AI, deciding what not to worry about is part of the map. You can safely ignore arguments about whether machines are secretly conscious, headlines promising that everything changes next month, and the pressure to try every new app your friends mention.
