Poin penting

  • Opportunity usually sits close to home, hidden by the familiarity that makes it look ordinary
  • Wealth comes from discovering what your neighbours need and supplying it well
  • Earning honestly is a duty, because money well made funds good in the world
  • Waiting for a grand position before doing good work means never doing it
  • Look hard at what you already own before selling it to chase something distant

  1. Diamonds under your own farm

Russell Conwell delivered the lecture Acres of Diamonds thousands of times across America in the late 1800s and used the earnings to found Temple University. It opens with a story he heard from a guide on the Tigris: a Persian farmer named Ali Hafed, content until a priest tells him about diamonds, sells his land, wanders the world searching, and dies poor.

  2. Opportunity sits where you stand

Conwell's core claim is that your present place already contains what you need to succeed, and the reason it looks barren is that you have never examined it properly. He fills the lecture with cases of people who left home to chase wealth, only for someone else to find it in the ground, the shop, or the problem they had abandoned.

  3. Find out what people need

How do you actually dig for these diamonds? Conwell's answer is to study the people around you and discover what they want.

  4. Getting rich is honourable

Conwell was a preacher, and a large part of the lecture is his defence of making money. He argues that money is power for good: it funds schools, hospitals, churches, and families, and that a person who can earn honestly and chooses not to has abandoned a duty.

  5. Greatness in ordinary places

The closing theme is that greatness does not require high office or a famous name. Conwell points to people who did remarkable things as clerks, teachers, mothers, and tradesmen, and he argues that waiting for a grand position before doing something worthwhile is the surest way never to do it.

  6. Put it to work

This week, walk your own neighbourhood or workplace as if you were a stranger, and write down 5 problems people complain about or things they cannot easily get. Ask 3 customers, colleagues, or neighbours what they wish someone would sell or fix, and listen without pitching.
