Logic: Everyday Playbook
Главные выводы
- When a child says it is not fair, agree that like cases deserve like rules, then name the difference that changes this case.
- Treat a single success story as a question, not proof: ask how many tried the same path and what happened to the ones nobody retells.
- Before a famous name settles an argument, ask whether they are expert in this field, whether they are paid to say it, and whether other experts agree.
- At homework time, say talk me through it and ask what a wrong answer would look like, instead of handing over the answer yourself.
- Check your own warnings before you give them: a chain of maybes is not a certainty, and most either-or choices hide a third option.
Внутри этого бита
- When a child says it is not fair
It is not fair usually arrives when one child gets something another does not: a later bedtime, a bigger allowance, a trip alone to the shop. Underneath it sits a real logical principle, consistency, which means treating similar cases alike.
- When a success story is offered as proof
At a family gathering someone offers a story as proof: my friend's son quit college and now runs three restaurants, so degrees are a waste. The story may be true.
- When a famous name is quoted as proof
Children borrow authority constantly: a footballer says this phone is the best for students, a gaming star says homework is pointless. Relying on authority is not a mistake in itself, since most of what anyone knows comes from trusting people who know more.
- When homework says explain your reasoning
Many worksheets now ask children to explain their reasoning, and many parents freeze, because the answer feels obvious and the explanation does not. The play is to stop supplying answers and use two prompts instead: talk me through it, one step at a time; and what would a wrong answer look like?
- When your own warning becomes a slippery slope
Parents argue too, and under stress their arguments are often weak. The slippery slope claims one step leads inevitably to disaster: if you drop music now, you will quit everything you ever start.
- When a big number does the selling
Academies, schools and summer camps sell with big numbers: twelve state-level players trained here, five hundred happy families. The number may be real; the missing piece is the denominator, the total it was drawn from.
