Những bài học chính

  • Confidence in career planning is not certainty about the future; it is being able to decide, act, and change course calmly when new evidence arrives.
  • To stop drifting, keep a two-week energy log, writing after each workday one task that lifted you and one that drained you.
  • Explore by filling a role card for two or three jobs, using at least two sources, one of them a person who does the work.
  • Commit to one target role for six to twelve months, say it in one sentence, and start a proof project a stranger could check.
  • When a setback knocks you down a rung, name the rung you are on now and restart that rung's practice, not the whole plan.

  1. Five rungs from drifting to steering

This book treats career planning as a skill you can climb, like cooking or driving, rather than a gift some people are born with. The ladder has five rungs.

  2. Rung one to two: from drifting to noticing

Drifting feels like being busy but going nowhere. You apply for whatever appears, accept whatever is offered, and cannot say what you want next.

  3. Rung two to three: from noticing to exploring

Once you know which tasks you want more of, the next question is which jobs are full of them. Exploring means turning your list into two or three real job names and learning what those jobs are really like.

  4. Rung three to four: from exploring to committing

Exploring is comfortable, and some people stay there for years, collecting cards and courses without ever choosing. Committing means picking one target role for the next six to twelve months and saying it in one sentence: I am working towards becoming a hotel trainer within a year.

  5. Rung four to five: from committing to steering

Committed planners have a direction and are working towards it. Steering planners also check regularly whether the direction still makes sense, and adjust it when the evidence changes.

  6. Slipping down a rung and climbing back

Every confident planner slips at some point. A redundancy, a new baby, a move to another city or a run of rejections can knock you from steering back to exploring, or even to drifting.
