1. When you walk into a room and forget why

   It happens to everyone. You get up to fetch something, walk into the kitchen, and the reason has gone.

2. When a new name slips straight away

   New names often vanish within seconds, and the reason is attention. When you are introduced, you are busy with your handshake, your own name and what to say next, so the new name is never properly stored.

3. When you cannot remember locking the door

   You reach the bus stop and the doubt arrives: did I lock the door? Did I switch off the iron?

4. When your child must learn something by heart

   A poem for assembly, a times table, a short speech, lines for a play: sometimes a child must learn words exactly. Reading the whole piece over and over is the slow way.

   A shopping list read out over the phone, five instructions from a teacher at the gate, a message for your partner: spoken lists are easy to lose. Working memory, the part of the mind that holds things for a few seconds, can only juggle a handful at once.

   Sometimes forgetting costs something: a missed class performance, a friend's birthday, a promise to a child. The play here is repair.
