  • When a phone says storage is full, find the three biggest space users first, and delete photos only after confirming they are safely uploaded.
  • Nobody genuine asks you to read out a one-time code, so stop, do not reply, and check through the official app or a number you already have.
  • When the internet drops, first ask whether it is one device or every device, because that single question tells you what to restart.
  • Before a child installs a new app, look at the age rating and permissions together and switch off access the app does not need.
  • Before handing down or selling a device, back it up, sign out of every account and erase it to factory settings.

  1. Play one: the phone says storage is full

Storage is the space on a device where apps, photos and files are kept. Cloud storage is space on a company's computers that your phone reaches over the internet.

  2. Play two: a message asks for a code

Phishing means a fake message pretending to come from someone you trust, such as a bank, a delivery firm or a relative, to trick you into handing over something valuable. A one-time code is the short number a service texts you to prove it is really you signing in.

  3. Play three: the internet is slow or down

The router is the box that shares the internet around your home by Wi-Fi, the wireless connection your devices use. Some homes also have a modem, which connects the house to the internet provider; often both are in one box.

  4. Play four: a child wants a new app

Permissions are the things an app asks to use on a device, such as the camera, contacts, microphone or location. Most apps also store information on the company's computers in the cloud, so what your child types or uploads may live somewhere else.

  5. Play five: a device is lost or handed down

Most phones and tablets have a find-my-device feature, which lets you locate them on a map from another device. If a phone goes missing, use it straight away: play a sound, then lock the phone and show a message with a contact number.

  6. Play six: when you are the family help desk

In many homes one adult becomes the help desk, the person everyone calls when something breaks. Borrow the habit professional help desks use: a ticket, which is simply a written note of the problem.
