  • When any message or call pushes urgency, stop and contact the person or company through a number or app you already trust.
  • Before a child starts using a new app, spend ten minutes together on who can contact them, what it shares, purchases and blocking.
  • If an account is taken over, secure the email first from a trusted device, hunt for leftovers, then warn contacts by another channel.
  • Money sent to a scammer is likeliest to be stopped in the first hours, so call your bank's fraud line and report it at once.
  • When a child tells you something went wrong online, thank them first; how you react decides whether they tell you next time.

  1. When a message demands action now

The most common moment in family security is a message or call that wants something immediately: a payment, a code, a click, remote access to a device. The play is always the same.

  2. When your child wants a new app or game

New apps arrive in a family faster than any parent can research them, so the play is a ten-minute setup done together rather than a verdict from you alone. Sit side by side and check four things: who can message or add them, what the app shares by default including location, whether purchases need your approval, and how to block and report someone.

  3. When an account has been taken over

Signs of a takeover include a password that suddenly fails, friends asking about odd messages you never sent, or alerts about sign-ins from unfamiliar places. Move fast, and in the right order.

  4. When a phone goes missing

A lost phone is now a lost wallet, a lost key ring and often your second factor as well, so the play has two tracks: find the device and protect the identity inside it. First, try to locate it and ring it from another device.

  5. When money has already gone

Even careful families sometimes send money to a scammer: a fake courier fee, a too-good offer, a payment request that looked genuine. The play here is speed.

  6. When your child says something went wrong

The most important play in this book happens in the first ten seconds after a child says, I think I did something bad. How you react decides whether they come to you next time.
