  • India's survival as a united democracy after 1947 was never guaranteed and remains remarkable
  • The first decade built the institutions: a constitution, elections, integrated states, and a neutral army
  • Redrawing states by language strengthened rather than broke the union
  • The Emergency showed how quickly democracy can bend and how voters can restore it
  • Since 1991 markets, regional parties, and identity politics have reshaped the republic

In deze bit

  1. The country nobody expected to last

In 1947, most foreign observers expected India to fall apart. It was poor, mostly illiterate, split by religion and language, and had just lost a million people to the violence of Partition.

  2. Building the republic in a decade

The first ten years did the heavy lifting. Vallabhbhai Patel and his officer V.

  3. Language, states, and holding together

One of the fiercest early battles was over language. Nehru feared that carving states along linguistic lines would breed separatism, but when Potti Sriramulu fasted to death in 1952 demanding a Telugu state, the government gave way, and a commission redrew the map of India by language in 1956.

  4. The Emergency and the limits of power

In June 1975, facing a court ruling that voided her election and a growing protest movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan, Indira Gandhi declared a national Emergency. Opposition leaders were jailed, the press was censored, and her son Sanjay ran forced sterilisation and slum clearance campaigns that terrified the poor.

  5. Markets, mandal, and mandir

The final third covers the turbulent years from the 1980s onward, which Guha frames around three forces. The first is economic: the licence system that had strangled business gave way in 1991, when a balance of payments crisis forced Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh to open the economy, unleashing software firms, private airlines, and a new middle class.

  6. Put it to work

This week, read the chapter on the first general election and then look up how the Election Commission still runs polling in your constituency; the continuity is striking. If you are preparing for an exam, build a one page timeline of the integration of the princely states and a second one on the reorganisation of states, since both are perennial questions.
