- Two years by a pond
In 1845 Henry David Thoreau built a small cabin beside Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts, and lived there for a little over 2 years. Walden is his report on that experiment, and its question is one you may recognise from a tired Monday: how much of what I work for do I actually need?
- The true price is life
The opening chapter, Economy, gives the book its central tool. Thoreau proposes that the real cost of anything is the amount of life you must trade to get it, now or in the future.
- Simplify, then simplify again
Thoreau's advice for daily living is to cut the number of things demanding your attention until what remains can be handled well. He notices that people are rushed not because life requires it but because they have said yes to too much: too many possessions, too many obligations, too much news.
- Wake up to the present
Beneath the practical advice lies a spiritual claim: most people are only half awake. Thoreau says he went to the woods because he wanted to live deliberately and face the essential facts of life, so that at the end he would not find he had never really lived.
- Solitude is not loneliness
Thoreau spent much of his time alone, and he defends solitude as a source of strength rather than a symptom of failure. Company, he argues, is often a way of avoiding your own thoughts, and constant chatter leaves you knowing everyone's opinions except your own.
- Put it to work
This week, work out the life-cost of one purchase you are considering by dividing its price by your hourly take-home pay, and decide with that number in front of you. Cancel or pause one subscription, group, or commitment that takes more from you than it gives.
