- Rule yourself first: a leader ruled by anger or greed loses everything
- Your neighbour is your rival and your neighbour's neighbour is your friend
- Use persuasion, gifts and division before force, because force costs the most
- Money handlers will skim, so build written accounts and independent audits
Inside this bit
- The manual behind the empire
Imagine a young ruler who has just won a kingdom and now has to keep it: pay soldiers, collect taxes, judge disputes, watch neighbours and spot traitors. The Arthashastra, attributed to Kautilya, the adviser linked with the founding of the Mauryan empire, is the handbook for that ruler.
- Seven limbs of a healthy state
Kautilya describes the state as a body with seven limbs: the ruler, the ministers, the territory with its people, the fortified capital, the treasury, the army and the allies. A weakness in any one limb spreads to the others.
- A ruler who controls himself first
Before Kautilya lets the king govern anyone, he demands that the king govern himself. The six enemies inside a person are lust, anger, greed, pride, arrogance and reckless excitement, and a ruler who serves them will lose the kingdom.
- Neighbours, circles and four methods
The most quoted part of the book is the circle of states, or mandala. Your immediate neighbour is a natural rival, because you share a border and want the same land.
- Treasury, spies and honest accounts
Kautilya spends chapters on money because a state without revenue cannot do anything else. He details taxes on land, trade and mining, sets salaries for every post, and warns that officials handling money will find ways to skim it, just as a fish in water cannot help drinking.
- Put it to work
Draw your own seven limbs, whether for a team, a family business or a study plan, and mark honestly which one is weakest, then spend this week strengthening that one. Design a fixed daily routine with blocks for review, planning and rest, and keep it for 5 days to see how it changes the people around you.
